Bettsy Mitchell is an artist of many forms including watercolor, pen and ink, jewelry, computer graphics and painted wall decor, although photography has moved to the top of the list as her strongest passion in recent years. She describes her creativity as a constant tug on her thoughts, needing to be captured and communicated to others. With an artistic eye that can’t be turned off since childhood, she is compelled to convey her creative view of the world for others to enjoy. She considers herself a “photographic artist“, lending her ability to focus on color, contrast, and lines to her artistic skills. Being a National Geographic enthusiast since childhood, she is most proud of her work "Shady Rest" having been accepted into Nationals Geographic's Reader's Choice Collection in 2011. Her most recent award is for the photo "Ma Pearl's Heron" which received third place at the St. George Plantation Association Jury Show in March 2012.
Bettsy graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Recreational Therapy, which enabled her to use art as a tool to teach self expression, coping skills and anger management in residential mental health facilities. Her influence began as a child, influenced by her many homes as a well-traveled “military brat” which include colorful New Mexico, exotic Hawaii, and historic Europe. Despite her many travels, she has settled in Quincy, Florida where her family is from, continuously striving to capture the unique beauty of the Gadsden County area. Bettsy is dually inspired by Florida’s Forgotten Coast where her family has had a beach house in Carrabelle, Florida for five generations. Because of its long instilled sentimental value, she has developed a passion for coastal preservation and hopes to promote awareness of how fragile our coasts truly are through her work.
